World Duchenne Awareness Day 2023: Breaking Barriers Globally

World Duchenne Awareness Day 2023 marked a great success in our mission to advocate for people living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD/BMD) and to break down the barriers they face in their daily lives. Across the globe, organizations, institutions, families, and other stakeholders rallied together to make a lasting impact. Here, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and initiatives that made this year’s awareness day a success.

Activating Campaigns Worldwide

From all over the world, organizations and families came together to activate impactful campaigns that resonated with the theme of Breaking Barriers. They were raising awareness about the challenges faced by those with DMD/BMD and advocating for their rights to lead fulfilling lives. These efforts took various forms, including family gatherings, meetings, and online webinars.

WDAD Documentary: Breaking Barriers

One of the highlights of World Duchenne Awareness Day 2023 was the launch of the official documentary, WDAD Documentary: Breaking Barriers. Directed by Nicoletta Madia and produced by Arimvideo, this powerful documentary shares moving stories from Italy, Turkey, and Mexico. It portrays the journeys of individuals living with Duchenne and their families, highlighting how they overcome daily barriers with strength and resilience. At the same time, the documentary serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and support in the Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy community.

The Official Theme: Breaking Barriers

The theme for World Duchenne Awareness Day 2023, ‘Breaking Barriers’, served as a societal request for change. People living with DMD/BMD face physical, healthcare, and social barriers that significantly limit their participation in community life and activities. On September 7th, the global community joined forces, embracing the responsibility to break down these barriers and foster inclusivity. Together we are committed to creating a world where everyone can live their life to the fullest.

Landmarks Illuminate in Red

As the evening descended, iconic landmarks and historical buildings around the world lit up in red. Red is the symbolic color of WDAD. These remarkable displays of support are organized by many dedicated organizations. Examples include the Niagara Falls in Canada, illuminated by Defeat Duchenne Canada, the Dancing House in the Czech Republic, brought to life by Parent Project Czech Republic, and the iconic Cibeles in Spain, illuminated by Parent Project Spain. These actions served as powerful symbols of solidarity and drew attention to the need for awareness and action.
